CoverMyCamera is software privacy for your MacBook’s built-in camera and microphone an alternative to plastic lens covers that can damage the display when closed. One click covers and stops the camera from being accessible and mutes the mic system wide. It runs locally, collects no product telemetry, and fails open so camera access restores if the app stops. Hey Product Hunt — I’m Mohamed, maker of CoverMyCamera. I built this because a lot of people still use sticky plastic webcam covers on MacBooks, and Apple has warned that those can damage the display when the lid closes. I wanted the same privacy idea as software: one click to block the built-in camera and mute the mic system-wide, without a physical shutter. CoverMyCamera is a local macOS menu-bar app for the built-in MacBook camera and mic. Design goals: One-click camera block + system-wide mic mute No product telemetry Fail-open: if the app stops, camera access restores One-time license, up to 3 Macs ($12.99) with a 24 hour free trial Site / download: https://www.covermycamera.app I’d love feedback from Mac users who care about camera/mic privacy — especially anything confusing in the install flow, the menu bar UX, or how we explain “software cover” vs a physical one. Happy to answer questions here.

Does the failsafe open up automatically if the app crashes, or do I have to relaunch it manually to get my camera back?

Quick question for you on the fails-open behavior: if the app crashes or I quit it manually while the camera is blocked, does the mic un-mute right away or stay muted until I reopen the app and toggle it off?

Does the one-time license include updates, or is there a separate cost when new macOS versions ship and potentially break the camera or mic hooks?

the fails-open approach is genuinely thoughtful, so many privacy tools lock you out for good. clean solution to a real problem.

The one-click cover and unmute worked smoothly on my MacBook, and I love that it runs locally with no telemetry. The fail-open design gives real peace of mind if the app ever quits unexpectedly.
