birthdays.app is a text-based birthday reminder app. • Birthday + early reminders via text message • Import birthdays from Google Calendar or Facebook • Add friends easily via text (“Joe Aug 8”) • Send a real card: choose your card, write your message, and we’ll mail it. Just because a calendar works doesn't mean it's the right tool. Texts are simpler and impossible to miss.

A few years back, I bought the birthdays.app domain to build a simple text-based birthday reminder app.

Prior to that, I hacked together a duct-tape version for myself with Google Sheets + Zapier. The text reminders were impossible to miss and simpler than my other options, so I decided to make a proper app for anyone to get the birthday reminders.

Over time, I've added easier ways to import birthdays—both Google Calendar sync (via OAuth) and Facebook friends importing (via Chrome extension). Users can also add friends manually or by text ("Joe Aug 8").

I also recently added the ability to send a real birthday cards.

The app is built with simplicity at heart—from the quick sign-up (phone number + text code) to the reminder experience. It's built for you to not check it. To quietly help you remember birthdays, without the fluff that's common in most social apps.

I do realize it's possible to remember birthdays with a calendar - I'd rather wake up to a morning text reminder than see a friend's birthday next to my 2pm dentist appointment. Just because you *can* cut a pizza with a butter knife doesn't mean you should.

Thank you for reading, I'm open to any thoughts, ideas, or feedback.

Love how the text-based approach cuts through the noise. One thing I'd love to see is customizable reminder timing per person, so for my mom I can get a heads-up two weeks early to actually send something meaningful, but for coworkers a simple day-of ping is plenty. Would make the app feel way more personal.

The "Joe Aug 8" text-to-add feature is genuinely handy, way faster than digging through menus. Also love that it pulls birthdays straight from Google Calendar so I didn't have to re-enter a thing.

Finally ditched my spreadsheet of excuses for forgetting birthdays. The card mailing feature caught me off guard, super thoughtful touch for people like me who can barely remember to send a text on time.

A real card through the mail is such a thoughtful touch. One thing that would make this even better for me is a way to set recurring yearly gift ideas or favorite things for each person so the reminder text includes a quick prompt like "they mentioned loving sci-fi last year."

Text reminders hit different than calendar alerts, I always forget those. Love that you can just text "Joe Aug 8" and it adds him.
