First and foremost, I wanted to build an app for myself. I moved fairly often and, along with that, changed doctors and clinics. In that situation it’s easy to lose medical documents, forget about scheduled appointments, or simply not have your full health history at hand. Originally I planned for the app to have server sync alongside the Android version. I haven’t dropped that idea — I’ve just put it off, for reasons of security and the complexity of building server infrastructure. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find an existing app that fully fit my needs. Most such solutions are aimed at clinics and medical professionals rather than private users. On top of that, they usually lack any wellbeing features. There’s one more reason I decided to make Vessel myself. I don’t like the modern trend where a user’s data effectively stops belonging to them. In the end a person becomes not the owner of their device and data, but more of a tenant. Personally, I want to move in the opposite direction: the data should belong to the user, and the app should be a tool for working with it, not its owner. This is the principle I want to build into Vessel.
