Vellium is a free, open-source desktop AI workspace for character chat, multi-character roleplay, long-form writing, RAG, LoreBooks, MCP tools and plugins. Bring your own backend—OpenAI-compatible APIs, OpenRouter, LM Studio, Ollama or KoboldCpp—while chats, characters, projects and knowledge stay in a local SQLite database. Native builds are available for macOS, Windows and Linux.
I built Vellium because existing AI frontends made me choose between expressive character and roleplay workflows, serious long-form writing, and local-model tooling. I wanted one desktop workspace where characters, multi-character scenes, LoreBooks, RAG, branching chat, writing projects, MCP tools and plugins could actually work together.
Vellium is MIT-licensed and provider-agnostic. You can use cloud APIs or local backends such as LM Studio, Ollama and KoboldCpp, while workspace data stays in local SQLite.
This is the first 1.0 release. I’d especially love feedback on onboarding, provider compatibility and the writing and roleplay workflow.
bring your own backend is huge, love that you support ollama and lm studio natively. one thing that would actually seal the deal for me is a proper mobile companion app or at least a solid web view that syncs with the local sqlite db, sometimes i want to keep writing on my phone or ipad without firing up the whole desktop client.
