I failed a data analyst interview about three years ago and it still bugs me.
It wasn't syntax. They handed me a schema I'd never seen, asked why signups in one region converted worse than the rest, and I froze. I could write window functions in my sleep. I just didn't know what to ask the data.
Every site I'd practiced on had trained me for the wrong thing. Two clean tables, obvious columns, one correct answer. Nothing like the actual job.
TheQueryLab is my attempt at the version I wish I'd had. Real business questions, schemas with the mess left in, and problems that don't quietly tell you which join you're supposed to use.
The bit I want you to poke holes in is QueryBrainstorm. It's an AI assistant inside the editor that's built specifically not to solve the problem. It'll fix your syntax, tell you what your query is actually returning, and ask you the one question you're avoiding. Then it stops. Getting it to hold back took far longer than getting it to be helpful, and I'm still not convinced I've got the balance right.
There's other stuff in there. Timed hackathons, daily challenges, a free course, learning paths if you want structure.
I'm an analyst who can build things and cannot market them, which is why this is my first proper launch anywhere. If the premise is wrong, today is a much better day to find that out than six months from now.
If you've interviewed for a data role recently I'd really like to know what actually caught you out. And if you hire analysts, tell me honestly whether an AI sitting next to someone while they practice feels like cheating. I've gone back and forth on it.
