You've probably seen the "tap and hold" trend on X — an image that looks
plain in your timeline, but reveals a completely different picture the
moment you tap and hold it. I wanted a dead-simple way to make one, so I
built Tap and Hold Image Maker.
How it works: X renders transparent PNGs differently depending on the
background — light in the timeline, black when you tap and hold. Paint the
part of your image you want visible in the timeline, and the tool computes
the exact colour + alpha for every pixel so the hidden part reveals itself
only on tap.
What you get:
🖌️ Paint the visible area with a brush (+ feather slider for soft edges)
🔍 Drag a before/after slider to preview both states before exporting
📤 One-click export as PNG8 with alpha — the exact format X needs
🌍 Works in English, 中文, 日本語, 한국어, Español, and Português
And the important part: nothing is uploaded. It's 100% client-side —
your image never leaves your browser, no account, no server.
One gotcha worth knowing up front: you have to post from a desktop browser.
The X mobile app re-encodes images to JPEG and strips the transparency,
which breaks the whole effect — it's covered in the FAQ so nobody gets
caught out.
