Subti turns VLC subtitles into an interactive language-learning tool on macOS. Option-click a word or select a phrase for contextual translation, save useful vocabulary, review it with spaced repetition, and export it to Anki. It works with local video files, needs no account, and can run translations locally on your Mac
I built Subti because this was basically my own language-learning workflow: pause VLC, copy a subtitle, open a translator, figure out what the phrase means, save it somewhere, then go back to the film.
I wanted that whole loop to disappear.
With Subti I can just Option-click a word or select a phrase directly in the subtitles, understand it in context, save it, and keep watching.
I also wanted it to work with local video files and local models instead of requiring another streaming platform or account.
This is the first public version, so I’d really appreciate feedback from people who learn languages through films — especially around the subtitle interaction itself and what would make the review flow more useful.
