Scumble is a free, open-source desktop editor for AI inpainting. Select part of a picture, say what belongs there, and the result lands as its own colour-matched layer. Runs on your own ComfyUI or your own API keys: FLUX 3, GPT Image, Nano Banana and more.

Hey Product Hunt 👋 I'm Dennis, and Scumble started as a weekend project. I do a lot of inpainting, and I kept doing the same dance: build a mask here, run a workflow there, pull everything back into an image editor, fix the edges, repeat. So I built an editor made for exactly that. What it does: 🎯 Select by painting, by pointing at an object, or by typing what it is 🧱 Every result comes back as its own layer, colour-matched to its surroundings. Your original is never touched ✂️ Through an API, only the area around your selection leaves your machine, and the answer comes back at full resolution 📦 Boxes in the prompt: draw where things go and describe each box (FLUX 3 Image, Ideogram 4) 🖼️ Reference images by name: "put their cup from @img1 on the sill" 🔌 Your own ComfyUI (local, remote or Comfy Cloud) or your own keys for FLUX 3, FLUX.2, GPT Image, Nano Banana, Seedream, Qwen, Ideogram and more 🤖 An MCP server with 105 tools, so Claude Code or any other MCP client can drive the editor 🎞️ 46 film looks as layers, retouch tools, PSD / ORA / TIFF export, and pictures of 15,000 pixels and more It's free and open source (GPL-3.0). No account, no telemetry, and your API keys stay in the system's credential store. You pay the providers directly; Scumble takes no cut. Honest status: it's version 0.1.x and moving fast. Windows comes first: it's in the Microsoft Store (signed by Microsoft), and there's a GitHub installer and a portable zip. Linux builds come out of CI, but I haven't run them myself yet. Mac is planned. Not every API provider has been tested live. The tutorials (two sceptics, one editor): https://www.denrakeiw.com/scumbl... One question for you: what's the most annoying step in your inpainting workflow today?

PSD export is a useful detail here. If an AI edit is almost right, it’s nice to be able to finish it in another editor instead of generating again.

Hey Scumble! First of all, great video! I spend my weekends in Lightroom and PS when I'm not out taking photos. I felt myself participating in that conversation :)

Have you received any feedback for tracking token spend or cost? Just thinking out loud, I can spend hours in Lightroom without realizing how much time has gone by.

Every restyle pass I run destroys the type, so I end up re-overlaying the real text by hand afterward. If a selection has words in it, does the layer come back with readable type?

How well does Scumble handle larger selections or edits where the surrounding lighting and shadows need to change along with the new object?

For people already using tools like ComfyUI having a proper desktop editor around it makes a lot of sense. It feels more practical than switching between different tool for every edit.

The colour matched layer part caught my attention. That could make small edits much easier to blend into a existing image.

I like that it can work with your own ComfyUI setup and API keys. A good addition would be a simpla way to compare a few generated versions side be side before choosing one.

The layer-based approach is a really nice touch. It makes AI edits feel more like normal photo editing instead of having to redo the whole image.
