I built it out of frustration. Every time I needed to merge or compress a PDF, the "free" online tools wanted me to upload confidential contracts and bank statements to servers I didn't control. For anyone handling sensitive documents — and anyone subject to GDPR — that's a non-starter.

Under the hood it's Electron + React, with real engines doing the heavy lifting: Ghostscript (compression & PDF/A), qpdf (AES-256 encryption), Tesseract (OCR), and LibreOffice headless (Office → PDF conversion). Same quality as the cloud tools — zero servers.

A folder watching feature would be a game changer for my workflow. If I could drop PDFs into a watched folder and have SafePDF auto-apply rules like "compress anything over 2MB" or "OCR all scanned files," that would save a ton of repetitive clicking.
Finally a PDF tool that doesn't sneak my tax docs onto someone's cloud. Merged a stack of statements offline in seconds, clean and fast.
honestly the offline-first angle is what got me, since I deal with client contracts all day and uploading to random sites always felt sketchy. merge worked smoothly and it was nice not seeing an upload spinner for once.
Really glad something like this exists, been wanting a local-only PDF tool forever. One thing that would make it even better for me: add a way to create and save reusable redaction profiles so I don't have to manually mark the same fields across dozens of similar contracts every time.
honestly the local-only angle is exactly what i need for client contracts, but one thing would make it way better for me: a batch queue where i can drop 30 pdfs at once and run merge, compress, and ocr across all of them in one go instead of doing them one by one.
