Six free calculators for the questions every gardener guesses at: how much soil, when to start seeds, how many plants fit, when to replant, whether old seed is viable, and how to balance compost. Every formula documented. No login, no paywall.
Hey Product Hunt 👋
I'm a gardener on the weekends. RootCalcs started with a wheelbarrow problem: I filled a raised bed, ran short on soil, and drove back to the store. The guide I'd followed said to "estimate." I teach people to be precise with money, and buying twice what you need is just a math problem nobody had bothered to solve cleanly.
So I built six calculators that give exact answers:
🛏️ Raised bed soil — bags, bulk yards, cost, and the break-even point where bulk delivery beats bags 🌱 Seed starting — enter your last frost date, get sowing + transplant dates for 25+ crops 📏 Plant spacing — row vs. intensive vs. square-foot layouts, compared side by side 🔁 Succession planting — repeat-sowing schedule with the last viable date before fall frost 🧪 Germination rate — test old seed, get a verdict and an over-seeding number 🍂 Compost ratio — balance browns and greens to the C:N range where a pile actually heats
The thing I care most about: every page shows its formula. You can check the arithmetic with a pencil. Where the math has known caveats — soil settles 10–20% in year one, fall crops run ~2 weeks slow, paper-towel germination tests flatter your seeds — the page says so instead of pretending precision it doesn't have.
No login, no paywall, plain fast HTML that works on a phone in the garden.
It's free, and I'd genuinely love to know: what's the garden calculation you redo every single season that I should build next?
Love that every formula is documented and visible on the page, it makes the tool feel honest and actually useful for learning rather than just spitting out numbers. No login or paywall is the cherry on top.
love that the formulas are actually documented, made me trust the numbers right away. the seed viability one saved me from tossing a whole packet that was probably still fine.
