QalamMR
A VR calligraphy workshop with haptic grooves and a real pen
QalamMR — the first spatial calligraphy workshop for Meta Quest 3 + Logitech MX Ink. • Learning Mode — trace inside 3D carved grooves with haptic feedback • Free Practice — pressure-sensitive ink, 3D gold relief, save & export • Flux Mode — calligraphy flows through space as a living ribbon • Gallery of Wisdom — explore masterworks inside a historic sanctuary Built solo in 33 days. AI wrote every line of code. Top 3 Finalist at Logitech DevStudio.
This project started from a personal obsession with traditional Arabic calligraphy (hüsnü hat). If you've ever tried it, you know how tough the learning curve is—you need a specific reed pen (qalam), the exact angle, and years of muscle memory. I wanted to see if mixed reality could capture that exact, tactile feeling and make this ancient art accessible to anyone.
The 33-day sprint using AI to build the entire Unity backend was a wild ride, and taking it all the way to Logitech HQ still feels surreal. But the best part was testing it with the MX Ink stylus for the first time—feeling the vibration when you stray from the path, or watching the ink flow in 3D space through Flux Mode. It really made me realize we're just scratching the surface of what's possible in MR.
Congrats on the finalist spot, that is seriously impressive for 33 days solo. The Flux Mode sounds magical. One thing that would make me actually subscribe: a guided lesson path where master calligraphers record short lessons that play back in 3D space, so I can watch the stroke order from any angle before attempting it. Right now Free Practice feels a bit open ended for someone like me who does not know where to begin.
Learning Mode feels like cheating in the best way, the haptic groove guides your hand before you even know the stroke. Flux Mode caught me off guard, watching ink trail behind my pen mid-air is genuinely meditative.
The haptic feedback in learning mode actually surprised me — feeling the grooves guide the pen makes it so much more intuitive than just watching a video. Solid work for 33 days.
Built solo in 33 days is wild, you can really feel the focus in the haptics when tracing the grooves. Flux Mode is a standout, the ribbon flowing through space made me slow down and just watch it for a minute.
The haptics in Learning Mode are weirdly satisfying, it actually feels like the pen drags through the carved groove. Flux Mode is a trip watching letters float past you like ribbon in a breeze.
