PayMatrix
AI-powered expense sharing with direct UPI settlements.
PayMatrix is a premium, high-density expense sharing platform. It uses Gemini AI to instantly scan and split receipts, and features a proprietary algorithm to minimize the total transactions a group needs to settle up via direct UPI deep-links.
Hi Product Hunt! 👋 I'm Harshil, the maker of PayMatrix.
What inspired me to build this and what problem does it solve? I was tired of the friction involved in group expenses. Existing apps like Splitwise either looked outdated, forced you to manually type out long receipts line-by-line, or made you jump through hoops to actually pay your friends back. I wanted a tool that felt premium, did the heavy lifting for me, and closed the loop entirely.
How did my approach evolve while building this? I started with a focus purely on UI—aiming for a high-density, glassmorphic "Digital Obsidian" aesthetic using React 19 and Framer Motion. But as I built it, the real magic came from integrating AI. By hooking up Gemini 3.5 Flash Vision via Firebase Functions, PayMatrix can now read long, multi-photo receipts and automatically itemize and categorize them.
To solve the settlement problem, I added native UPI deep-linking and wrote a proprietary "greedy debt simplification" algorithm. This calculates the absolute minimum number of transactions needed for everyone to get paid back, and then generates direct GPay, PhonePe, or Paytm links.
The Tech Stack: Built with React 19, Vite, Firebase 12, Redux Toolkit, and Tailwind CSS.
I'd love to hear your feedback on the AI scanning accuracy and the UI design! Let me know what you think, and I'll be here all day answering questions. 🚀
Would love to see a recurring expense option for things like rent or shared subscriptions. Right now adding the same bill every month feels repetitive, and an auto split for recurring charges would make this way more useful for roommates.
Would love a way to mark recurring expenses like rent or subscriptions so they auto-add each month without re-uploading the same receipt. That would save a ton of friction for my flatmates and me.
Would love to see a feature that flags who hasn't paid back yet with a gentle nudge option, like a polite WhatsApp reminder you can send without leaving the app. It would save the awkward follow-ups in group chats and make settling up feel way less like chasing people down.
