Hey everyone! 👋
I built OpenNearby because I kept getting annoyed sending a file to someone in the same room and having it round-trip through the cloud — upload somewhere, wait, send a link, they download it. On the same WiFi. That's it, that's the whole complaint.
So OpenNearby just does the obvious thing: one device hosts, mDNS finds nearby devices automatically, and file transfer happens straight over the LAN at full network speed. No account, no cloud relay, no signaling server — ever, by default.
The part I'm most proud of: guests don't install anything. Open a browser, scan the QR code or hit the link, enter the 6-digit PIN, done. Works from any phone or laptop, iOS included. If you want to be a host too, there are native builds for macOS (Apple Silicon), Windows, and Linux, plus an Android app for share-sheet sending.
It's MIT-licensed and fully open source — code's on GitHub, would genuinely love eyes on it.
A couple of honest caveats for this v0.1.2 release: the Windows build isn't code-signed yet (SmartScreen will warn you) and the macOS build isn't notarized (you'll need one xattr -cr command to open it). Both are on my list — just didn't want to hold up the release for them.
Would love to hear what you think, and especially any bugs you hit on your network setup — mDNS behavior can be finicky across routers/VLANs and I want to shake those out early. 🙏
