Most contractors find out what a job actually earned months after it ended. The receipts are in a glovebox, the change orders are in a text thread, and the profit is a feeling until the accountant closes the year, by which point the next three jobs have already been bid on that same feeling.
Obra is project finance for people who build. The hard part was never the reports, it was the data entry. So we deleted it:
📸 Receipts follow the crew. WhatsApp a photo, forward a supplier invoice to your organization's private email address, or snap it in the app. Each one lands already scanned with amount, vendor, date, tax, category, etc. as a draft.
✅ Nothing posts itself. Every scan waits for a human tap. Crew captures from their own phone without ever seeing the project's finances; the office approves.
📊 Real numbers, live. Cash collected vs. recorded cost on every project. Change orders that adjust the contract while keeping the original value visible. Budget watch marks at 80% and 100%. A forecast that is never allowed to dip below what you've already spent.
🤖 It talks to your AI. Connect Claude or ChatGPT over MCP and just ask "how's the Westlake remodel doing?", or hand it a receipt. It only ever sees what your own role allows, and it can never delete, approve, pay or close anything.
Two principles I'd defend over any feature: Obra never labels an estimate as a result, and everything exports to CSV the moment you want it. It's a ledger, not a lock-in.
