I’ve been working on a compact multi-LAN + NVMe setup to simplify my NAS + router + homelab environment.
Instead of running separate devices, I wanted to explore whether a single mini PC could handle:
- routing / firewall (pfSense / OPNsense)
- NAS workloads
- container-based services

The key idea behind this setup is not raw performance, but structure:
- using multiple NICs for traffic separation (WAN / LAN / storage)
- using NVMe instead of SATA to reduce I/O bottlenecks
- keeping everything in a compact, low-power system

Some things I found interesting while testing:
- separating NAS traffic from LAN made a noticeable difference
- NVMe layout (OS / data / cache split) improves responsiveness
- thermal behavior becomes important under sustained workloads
