You're a homebuyer using Google Maps to scout various houses. Google Maps does many things incredibly well. But one thing it can't do is take an address and simultaneously find and map the nearest points of interest. With NearHome, you enter an address, pick the categories you care about, enter custom locations (e.g. work) and instantly see how centrally located the address is. You can also save your search criteria to use with other addresses, and view school district and flood data.
My wife and I were deep in our home search last year. (Yes, it's as awful as it sounds.) One thing that was very important for us was understanding how close we were to certain locations. So for every listing we were serious about, my wife would open Google Maps and manually search for the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, school, hospital, and a few other places we cared about (like Costco).
It worked, but it took forever because she did the search one by one.
So I built Nearby to allow homebuyers to enter an address, pick the categories, enter custom points of interest, and instantly see the closest locations. Everything is visualized on a map with the route of each location being shown simultaneously.
A few things that might be useful:
- You can add custom landmarks (your office, your parents' house, a specific school)
- Two modes: Nearest (closest per category) and Explore (browse multiple options for one category)
- Save searches so you can quickly compare multiple listings against the same criteria
- You can view School District data and Flood Zone information
It's early and I'm actively improving it. Would love to hear what the community thinks about the idea and suggestions for improvement.
