Mara is a voice-first AI companion for emotional support — not a chatbot. Open the app and talk. She responds in real time with a warm, natural voice. Unlike other AI apps, Mara remembers what you share across sessions — your people, your patterns, what helps. After every conversation, you get a personalized reflection with mood tracking and suggestions. Built with crisis safety, 14 languages, and compassionate gamification that never guilt-trips. For the 3am moments when no one picks up.
Hey Product Hunt 👋
I'm Ali, a solo developer. I built Mara because I know what it's like to need someone to talk to at 3am and have no one pick up.
Most mental health apps make you type. But when you're overwhelmed, anxious, or can't sleep — typing is the last thing you want to do. So I built something different: open the app, talk, and someone listens.
What makes Mara different from other AI companions:
• She remembers. Your dog's name, your girlfriend situation, the breathing exercise that helped last Tuesday. Conversations build on each other.
• She's voice-first. Powered by OpenAI's Realtime API over WebRTC. The voice is warm and natural — not robotic.
• She reflects back. After every session you get a personalized reflection: what came up, why it mattered, what might help next. Plus mood tracking, journal prompts, and therapeutic suggestions.
• She's crisis-aware. 94 detection phrases across 4 tiers. If someone expresses imminent risk, Mara provides crisis guidance and directs to 988 and emergency resources. This was non-negotiable.
• She doesn't guilt-trip. Miss a day? Your streak pauses silently. No shame notifications. No leaderboards.
The entire app — 18 screens, 25 services, 14 languages, iPad support, accessibility with 364+ labels — is built by one person. Every design decision asks: does this serve the user's healing, or just our metrics?
Mara is not a therapist. She's a companion for the spaces in between.
I'd love your feedback. Happy to answer anything about the tech, the design decisions, or the ethics of building AI for mental health.
