Shopify counts your stock. Landara costs it. Shopify holds one Cost per item per variant and overwrites it on every change, so last month's cost is gone and the freight invoice that lands three weeks late never reaches the units it paid for. Landara keeps a dated FIFO cost layer per receipt and draws it down oldest first, with freight and duty landed in before the layer forms. Out comes a ready-to-post journal for Xero or QuickBooks. Shopify keeps owning quantity, so there is no migration.
Hi everyone, Adam here.
**The problem, with round numbers.** A container of 1,000 units lands. Supplier invoice $10,000, so $10 a unit goes into Shopify. You sell 400 in the first three weeks. Then the forwarder bills $1,800 freight and the customs broker bills $700 duty plus $250 clearance. True cost was $12.75 a unit. The 400 you already sold are understated by $1,100, and the 600 still on the shelf are on the books $1,650 light. Nothing went wrong in the store. Shopify counted every unit correctly. The cost just lived in a spreadsheet the store had never seen.
**How it evolved, over six years and two dead ends.** In 2020 I built a purchase order reconciliation tool with OCR, learning Python and Next.js to wire it together. In mid 2025 I started a full inventory system: orders, purchase orders, fulfilments, forecasting. I got about a quarter of the way in and stopped, because I was rebuilding things Shopify already does well. In February 2026 Landara went live as a landed cost and purchase order tool. Shopify never approved it, it got around 20 signups, nobody paid, and they were right not to. It could not do much.
So in July I started again, much narrower. Nothing that connects to Shopify does FIFO except the big inventory systems, and those are built for big businesses. Landara does the cost side only and hands the journal to your bookkeeper to post. It will never forecast. When you outgrow it, go and buy one of the big systems.
Happy to argue about costing methods in the comments. Especially with accountants.
