My kids wanted to learn to read Japanese on our trip to Japan. It turns out, most signs on trains and menus in restaurants are all written in hiragana or katakana and it’s super easy to read!
I wrote the first version of the app on the trip and they loved it. It was super fun watching them read station names on the train before our trip ended!
A small thing that would help me a lot: when I tap a mora in the breakdown, also show the romaji underneath so I can connect the sound to the spelling while I'm still learning. Right now I keep flipping back to the converter to double check what I'm hearing.
The kana charts and tap-to-hear feature are a really nice touch for beginners, but I think a spaced repetition mode for the mora-by-mora drills would take this to the next level. Maybe quiz me on the ones I keep missing and gradually fade out the ones I nail. Would make it way easier to actually retain everything instead of just tapping through once.
