Inkiostro: Markdown Editor
Markdown editor with versions, LaTeX & EPUB. No subscription
Inkiostro is a native Markdown editor for Mac, iPad, iPhone and Android. Write in Markdown or in the Visual Editor — it's the same plainmd file. Keep 40 automatic versions and restore a single paragraph without losing the rest. LaTeX and Mermaid stay real text in your PDF. Export a publisher-ready EPUB with cover, ISBN and EU accessibility metadata. No account, no ads, no subscription: free to write, Pro is a one-time purchase.
Hi Product Hunt!
I'm Carlo. I've been writing Java for banks and public administration for 25 years, and building iOS/Mac apps under the AppJuice label since 2010. Inkiostro is the editor I wanted for myself: native, fast, plain .md files, and no subscription.
It started life as "Lettera". A naming clash with another app made me rename it, and Inkiostro ("ink" in Italian) turned out to be a better fit anyway.
What makes it different:
- Two ways to write: Markdown or the Visual Editor, same plain .md file. Switch anytime.
- Version history: 40 automatic versions per document, a line-by-line diff, and you can restore a single paragraph without losing what you wrote since.
- LaTeX & Mermaid that stay text: formulas and diagrams are selectable and searchable in the PDF, never flattened into images.
- Real EPUB publishing: build a book from many files, one chapter per file, with cover, ISBN, series, pop-up footnotes and the EU accessibility metadata generated for you. It warns you before a store would reject it.
- Your own CSS: start from one of 11 preview styles, add ready-made recipes (drop caps, small-caps chapter titles, scene ornaments) and watch the preview update as you type. Your style follows the document into PDF, EPUB and HTML, and every book can have its own.
- Scheduled backups as a plain zip you can open without the app.
Native on both sides: Swift on Mac/iPad/iPhone, Kotlin on Android. No account, no ads.
Free to write forever. Pro is a one-time purchase.
I'd love your feedback, especially from writers, students and anyone who's ever fought with an ebook export. I'll be here all day answering questions!
