I built Hanka because every quote app I tried felt like the opposite of what it was selling. Notifications about mindfulness. Ads between wisdom. Subscription paywalls around Zen proverbs that are 800 years old.
So I made the quietest app on my phone.
Here's what Hanka does:
- Shows you one curated quote per day (50 hand-picked quotes from Zen, Buddhist, and Taoist traditions)
- Tap to write a private reflection — a lightweight journal that stays on your device
- Double-tap for a gentle commentary that unpacks the quote's meaning
- Swipe to browse past quotes
Here's what it doesn't do:
- No ads. No tracking. No analytics SDKs. Zero.
- No push notifications. If you don't open it, it waits.
- No subscription. No IAPs. It's free.
- No data collection. Your reflections never leave your phone.
The name comes from 反歌 (hanka) — a Japanese "response poem" written after reading a longer work. That's the interaction model: read a quote, turn it over in your mind, respond.
