Filer is a file explorer with an AI that reads the folder you're in. Ask about the files, right-click any file for a one-off, or leave a Working Agent in the folder. Tell it what to do in plain English (.filer/AGENTS.md) — it reacts to new files, runs on a schedule, or watches a channel. The folder's trust level safely limits what it may touch. Filer runs on your machine with no subscription lock-in. Works with any model: the offline default, OpenAI, Anthropic, or your company's AI server.
A while back I launched an early version of Filer here — a WinUI app with basic smart search. Since then I rebuilt it completely from the ground up on Electron, and honestly rethought what it should even be.
The core idea now: the AI sits next to your files, and it reads the folder you're in. It's a full file explorer, so it's the app you're already living in rather than a separate tool to remember to open — open a folder and ask about what's in it, and the answers come from that folder's contents. Step into a subfolder and they narrow with you.
And when something deserves to keep happening without you, leave a Working Agent in the folder: tell it what to do in plain English (.filer/AGENTS.md) and it reacts to new files, runs on a schedule, or watches a channel — never touching anything outside that folder's boundary, because the folder's own trust level decides what it may touch.
Filer itself runs on your machine — no cloud account to create, no subscription lock-in — and you pick the model: the small default one (downloaded once with your OK, then it runs offline — fine for questions about a folder, and it takes a moment to load on each start), a larger local model, OpenAI, Anthropic, or a company's own AI server if you've got one.
Would genuinely love feedback, especially from anyone who's tried the old version — this is a very different app now.
