Believable: "Hi [Manager], I've got a clash on Friday afternoon — could I catch the notes and follow up on anything with my name on it?"
Dramatic: "Friday afternoon is when my soul traditionally leaves my body. Requesting to be excused before it does so publicly."
Absurd: "I'm required at a hearing to determine custody of my neighbor's parrot on Friday. I am, inexplicably, the responsible adult."
