Hi Product Hunt 👋

We’re the team behind Engine Mail, and today we’re excited to launch it.

Engine Mail started with a frustration we kept running into: email apps often made us choose between speed, useful AI, privacy, security, automation, and collaboration. We wanted to bring all of these together without taking meaningful control away from the user.

Engine Mail is a private, native email workspace for people who live in their inbox but do not want their email app creating another cloud copy of their mailbox.

Here is what makes Engine Mail different:

🔒 Private by default
Everyday mail is stored locally in an encrypted SQLCipher database. Account credentials and sensitive keys are protected by the system Keychain, while mail content remains on the user’s device by default.

🧠 AI on your terms
Use Apple Intelligence on supported devices, run open models locally with Ollama, or connect your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or OpenRouter key. Before content is sent to a cloud model, Engine Mail protects personal details and isolates email text as untrusted input.

🛡️ Security before every click
Phishing Shield analyzes incoming messages, displays SPF, DKIM, and DMARC results, detects misleading links and sender mismatches, blocks trackers and remote content, deeply analyzes suspicious URLs, and supports local attachment scanning.

🧹 Real inbox control
Screener holds messages from unknown senders for review. Unsubscriber identifies mailing lists. Cleaning Suggestions protects sensitive messages before recommending an action. Auto Clean allows users to preview and test rules against real mail before enabling them.

✍️ More than an email reader
Engine Mail includes thread summaries, extracted tasks, three AI reply styles, writing and grammar assistance, natural-language search, offline-first actions, engagement tracking with human and bot classification, secure thread links, team comments, Attachment Vault, Contact Intelligence, and support for 30 interface languages.

🔌 Built for trusted AI tools (MCP)
Power users can enable a loopback-only local MCP server for trusted clients such as Claude Desktop, Codex, and Cursor. Access can be limited by account and capability, keys are stored securely, and sending or changing mail can require human approval.

Engine Mail supports Gmail, Outlook and Hotmail, iCloud Mail, Yahoo Mail, and any email account with standard IMAP and SMTP access, all inside one unified inbox.

Our goal is not to replace your email provider. We are building a safer and smarter layer above it that gives users more intelligence, protection, and control without requiring them to hand over their entire mailbox.

We would genuinely value your feedback, especially on three questions:
1. Which problem matters most to you: privacy, security, AI, or inbox cleanup?
2. Which provider or platform should we prioritize next?
3. Is there one feature you would remove to make Engine Mail feel simpler?

Thank you for taking a look. I will be here throughout the launch, answering questions, listening carefully, and learning from your feedback.

Comment highlights

Since the local AI angle is a big selling point, a quick toggle to pick which threads actually get processed locally vs in the cloud would help people with limited hardware avoid slowdowns on huge inboxes. Bonus if it shows which mode each thread used.

The unified inbox pulled in my Gmail and iCloud seamlessly, and running the AI locally for thread summaries actually felt snappy on my laptop. Really impressed with the built-in tracker blocking and one-click unsubscribe, that's the stuff I've been wanting from a privacy-first client.

been using it for a couple days and honestly the local AI summarization is kind of a game changer, no more sending my inbox off to some random server. the tracker blocking is a nice touch too

The local AI option that runs without sending your inbox to a third party is a really thoughtful call, especially for people who'd otherwise never trust an AI assistant with their mail.
