I built DarlingClip after constantly hitting WhatsApp's 16MB status limit and 100MB chat limit while traveling. Every "free" compressor I tried either uploaded my videos to a sketchy server, added a watermark, or asked me to pay to remove it.
The problem was simple: people need to share videos on messaging apps without sacrificing privacy or quality. But existing tools treated compression as a generic task, not something tied to real-world app limits.
I started with a basic ffmpeg.js prototype, but quickly realized browser performance was the bottleneck. The evolution came from switching to WebCodecs and chunk-based processing, which let us handle larger files without crashing tabs. The biggest shift in approach was deciding to focus on presets rather than manual controls — most users don't know what bitrate means, but they know exactly where they want to post the video.
honestly the WhatsApp preset is super handy, hit the 16mb limit on the first try without me fiddling with bitrate settings. nice that it all just runs locally too.
Love that it runs locally and the WhatsApp/Telegram presets save the hassle. One thing that would push this over the edge for me: a simple slider to pick a target size between the presets, or let me type in my own MB cap for niche apps like Discord or email attachments. Would make it my default whenever I need to shrink a clip.
