Hi Product Hunt, I’m Shivam.

I love watching good series and films with my family, but every so often there’s a scene that makes the whole room go quiet. I got tired of grabbing the remote to skip it by hand, usually a few seconds too late, so I built something that does it for me.

CutCat is a free Chrome extension for Netflix. You pick what you’d rather not sit through: sex, nudity, gore, strong language. CutCat skips or mutes those scenes, and the show keeps playing.

What I cared about getting right:

  • A separate switch for each category. You can mute the swearing and skip nothing, or skip the gore and leave everything else.

  • Exact frames. A marking starts on the frame where the scene starts, so the jump lands where it should, not half a minute early.

  • Viewers decide. People mark scenes and other viewers vote on them. Three upvotes approve a marking; three downvotes remove it.

  • Private. It never records what you watch.

It runs in Chrome on a laptop or desktop.

The catalogue grows every time someone marks a scene. If you watch something on Netflix this week, mark one scene and help the platform grow. I’d also like to know which show you’d want covered first.

Comment highlights

How do you handle it when two people mark slightly different timestamps for the same scene? Seems like that could get tricky.

three upvotes to approve a marking seems low for something that edits what other people see. what stops someone from tagging a scene they just personally don't like, a political speech, a character they hate, as "strong language" to get it skipped? crowdsourced moderation with that low a bar tends to get gamed once enough people find it.

What happens with a show nobody has marked yet, does it just play everything as normal?

Do you have any demographic stats like who use these features the most? I think it could be a good social experiment how people consume content.

Wow, I feel the same way as you. I always skip the good movies and series to watch with family because of the mature content. Shivam, you did a great job making the idea a reality. I just installed the extension. Salute to your idea and making families comfortable.
