I'm Arturo, a Venezuelan developer. After the 2026 earthquake sequence hit Venezuela, I built CIVIS: a free citizen platform with no institutional funding, now covering:
🔍 A missing-persons registry that became the country's de facto one (tens of thousands of records)
🏠 A live shelter and aid-point map, built on Esri's ArcGIS platform, including a 3D damage map of affected buildings
🏥 Digitized hospital patient records from the earthquake response
📡 A real-time seismic radar visualizing the aftershock sequence as it unfolds
🌧️ NEW: a flood and landslide early-warning system, combining NASA's open LHASA landslide model with live rainfall forecasting, since floods/landslides actually kill more Venezuelans most years than any single earthquake
Everything is free, ad-free, and runs without institutional backing, mostly public data (NASA, Esri, open weather data) stitched together by one person. Currently building an SMS/WhatsApp relay so the warnings reach rural communities without reliable internet too.
Would love feedback from this community, especially on the offline/low-connectivity side, that's the hardest unsolved part.
the offline-first approach here is honestly really smart for a crisis like this, especially when networks are unreliable or totally down. whoever thought about making it work without internet basically built something that actually matters when people need it most.
Sería genial que añadieran un botón para compartir la ubicación exacta por WhatsApp con un solo toque, así alguien con poca señal puede avisar a su familia rápido sin tener que copiar y pegar coordenadas.
Sería genial que integraran un botón de "estado de batería" compartido, así cuando alguien reporta desde el celular con poca carga, los voluntarios saben que ese reporte es urgente y temporal, priorizando esos casos en el mapa antes de que el dispositivo se apague.
Una idea: agregar un botón para compartir la ubicación exacta vía WhatsApp o SMS, así cualquier familiar con un celular básico puede recibir coordenadas aunque no tenga la app instalada. Sería un salvavidas para abuelitos o personas en zonas rurales sin datos.
