Blast Radius Lab
Real infra. Real incidents. AI mentor. Real SRE skills
Blast Radius Lab is an AI-mentored SRE training platform where engineers learn by doing. No slides, no passive courses. You work in real AWS infrastructure, write real Terraform, build real observability stacks, and debug real incidents. Your AI mentor assigns tasks, pushes back when you take shortcuts, and doesn't move on until you understand what you did and why. It's the production experience engineers need without the production risk. Built by an SRE leader for the next generation of SREs
Hey, I'm Matt, an SRE leader in fintech. I built Blast Radius Lab because I kept seeing the same problem: engineers who learned from slides and videos but had never actually built the infrastructure they were supposed to manage.
The training options out there are either passive courses or empty sandboxes with no guidance. Neither builds real competence.
So I built a platform where you learn by building. Real Terraform, real AWS infrastructure, real observability stacks, real CI/CD pipelines, with an AI mentor that acts like a senior engineer. It assigns tasks, asks why you made the choices you did, and doesn't let you move on until you actually understand it.
The approach evolved a lot. It started as a set of scripts and a prompt. Now it's a full guided curriculum with six modules covering the core skills every SRE needs, all on real infra, not simulations.
Would love to hear from anyone in SRE, DevOps, or platform engineering. What's missing from the training you've seen?
Spent a few minutes in the lab and was surprised how quickly the AI mentor caught me skipping a step in the Terraform setup, made me actually explain my reasoning before letting me move on. Feels like having a senior SRE review your work in real time without the anxiety of paging someone at 2am.
Real AWS infra and an AI mentor that pushes back sounds like exactly what junior SREs are missing. One thing that would make this even more valuable: a peer review mode where two engineers get the same incident and have to compare their runbooks after, since half of real SRE work is aligning with humans under pressure.
Spent an hour on a Terraform task and the mentor actually made me redo a step because I skipped explaining my reasoning, which felt annoying in the moment but genuinely stuck with me afterward. The real AWS environment makes it feel way less like a sandbox toy.
