AX is an open-source runtime for running AI agents in production. Declare a task and AX gives it an isolated sandbox, prepares its repos, MCP servers and skills, controls network access, and manages models and secrets. Idle agents can suspend while waiting for models, tools or humans, then resume in under a second — with an architecture designed to scale to billions of agent tasks per cluster.
This came out of Google and I think the premise is pretty interesting: AI agents aren't really microservices or batch jobs, so why are we still running them like they are?
AX is an open-source runtime built specifically for agent workloads. Each task gets its own sandbox, workspace and network rules, and agents can suspend while they're waiting on a model, tool or human, then resume when there's work to do.
The scale they're targeting is pretty wild too — billions of concurrent agent tasks per cluster.
Worth checking out if you're starting to run a lot of agents in production.
