Hey there I built YumCha because every time I tried to learn Cantonese, the apps would quietly redirect me to Mandarin or hand me a dusty phrasebook from 1998. Cantonese has ~85 million speakers, a massive diaspora, and a living culture (Hong Kong film, Cantopop, dim sum culture), but the tools for learning it are way behind. YumCha is my attempt to fix that: • Structured, bite-sized lessons from Dim Sum Basics up through real conversations • Native Hong Kong audio on every word, no Mandarin speakers faking it • Speech recognition that grades your tones so you sound natural, not robotic • A 24/7 AI Cantonese tutor for when you want to ask "wait, why do people say 喂 when they answer the phone?" • Jyutping + Yale, traditional + simplified, pick whatever matches how you're learning • Spaced repetition flashcards that time themselves to how your memory actually works Free to start on iOS. I'd love feedback from learners, heritage speakers, teachers, especially on what's missing. What was the moment you gave up on learning Cantonese with another app? I want to make sure YumCha doesn't do that thing.
