I built a weight tracking app around a system I’ve used for years So, over the last few years I developed what I’d call my own model for controlling weight. It’s nothing revolutionary, but it helped me lose a lot of weight without becoming a fitness freak - and without the anxiety that often comes with that mindset. Over the last few months, I decided to turn that model into an app to address some of the shortcomings (at least in my opinion) of what’s currently available on the market. The idea behind my model is really simple: 1. How many calories did I roughly consume this week? 2. What happened to my weight this week? That’s it. Most fitness apps focus on daily noise. I shifted that into a weekly signal and designed my app around observing trends and outcomes over weekly intervals. A few examples of why this model works so well for me: * Had a big dinner tonight? No problem - balance it out over the rest of the week. * Bought a giant bag of chips and know it’ll disappear within a few days? Just log it once. * Going out this weekend? Enjoy it. Adjust during the week. * Didn't work out as hard this week? That's ok just set your activity level to low * Weight went up slightly? Look at the trend before panicking over one day. The app itself is intentionally very simple: * calendar-based weekly view * progress bar that stretches across the week - so if you’re on day 2 and your bar is already on day 5, you know something’s off 😄 * calories + weigh-ins * adjustable targets * visual trends * no clutter or “fitness influencer” energy A few things I personally find useful: * works well on both desktop and mobile - I use both regularly * AI can estimate calories from photos or text - most apps already do this, but it’s often hidden behind a ridiculous paywall * very low-friction logging system - sometimes I just want to log things roughly without clicking through tons of options or entering every single macronutrient * built-in AI companion that explains trends and answers questions about my data - at first I thought it wouldn’t be that useful, but after using it for a while I actually think it’s awesome. I’ve added weekly and daily summaries by default, but you can also ask things like: > “How much should I adjust my weekly target to reach my goal before summer?” It works better than regular ChatGPT because it gets access to your logged data - anonymized, of course. I’ve been dogfooding it daily for over a month now and fixing all the annoying things that made me quit other tracking apps in the past. The core app is free, and there’s a 2-week trial for the AI features if anyone wants to try them out. Still early, but I’d genuinely love feedback from people who also hate overly complicated calorie trackers.
