Still Within
Budget by purpose, not by bank. Private, one-time purchase.
Envelope budgeting on any timeframe: a trip, a year of clothing, a summer of BBQs. Expenses from any card or cash land in the right envelope. 100% on-device, "Data Not Collected" privacy label, works offline. Free for 5 envelopes, $4.99 once for unlimited. No subscription.
Hi Product Hunt!
I built a simple budget app because my bank kept answering a question I never asked.
My bank can tell me exactly what I spent in March. It can tell me what I spent on one card. But I never think in months or cards. I think in purposes: a trip to Japan, clothing for the year, groceries for July. Each of those has its own budget and its own timeframe, and no banking app can see any of them.
The breaking point was travel. A two-week trip isn't two weeks of spending. Flights get paid in February, hotels in April, and the trip is in August. My bank scattered those payments across months and cards. For years my fix was an Excel sheet, and it sort of worked, except a spreadsheet lives on my PC and I can't update it on the fly. What I actually needed was to log an expense on my phone in a few seconds, right when it happens, and see one simple answer: I set aside a budget for this trip, am I still within it?
So I built Still Within. You create an envelope for anything, give it a budget and any timeframe you like (or none), and add expenses as they happen. A progress bar answers the only question that matters. That's the whole app, and keeping it that small was the hardest part. Quick entry was the whole point, so nothing in it is complicated.
Along the way it grew a few things I needed myself:
- Foreign currency expenses (what I paid abroad AND what it cost at home)
- Splitting shared expenses with friends, my budget only counts my share
- Math in the amount field, because street food is 12.50+8.90
- CSV export, because it's your data
Two decisions I refuse to compromise on:
It's completely private. Everything stays on your device. No account, no cloud, no analytics, nothing. The App Store privacy label literally says "Data Not Collected".
It's a one-time purchase. Free for up to 5 active envelopes. If you need more, it's $4.99 once, forever. I'm tired of subscriptions and I'm not building one.
To be upfront about the limitations: it's iPhone-first (it runs on iPad too, but there's no sync between devices - that's the price of collecting nothing, and I think it's worth it for a finance app), and it's English only for now.
I'll be checking in all day between things. Honest feedback is very welcome, especially the critical kind.
