I built SANCTUM because the existing options didn't match the reality of how small and mid-sized teams actually run infrastructure. The commercial SSH-access tools were priced for companies with Fortune-500 budgets and Fortune-500 problems - we had neither. Rolling our own was the usual mess of authorized_keys sprawl, Ansible drift, and stale accounts nobody wanted to audit. What I wanted didn't exist: something lightweight enough to run on a t4g.micro, disciplined enough to converge without babysitting, and honest enough to be MIT-licensed so the next founder in my position doesn't have to pay to solve the same problem. So I built it.
