RPG OS is a free, open-source system for playing persistent games through a capable AI. Describe almost any world, become someone inside it, and decide what you do through normal conversation. Instead of depending entirely on an ever-growing chat history, RPG OS maintains the campaign in readable files: current state, characters, relationships, possessions, unresolved consequences, history, and supporting evidence.

I built RPG OS because I loved the freedom of AI-generated adventures but hated how fragile they became after enough conversations. A scene could be excellent, and then ten sessions later the AI might forget who knew what, lose an obligation, or quietly rewrite something important. My goal wasn’t to make another chatbot character. I wanted to see whether AI could function more like a persistent game engine. So RPG OS moves important state into ordinary files and gives the GM explicit rules for updating, saving, retrieving and correcting that state. I recently completed a 30-session synthetic stress test and published the transcripts and findings openly—including the failures. It’s still experimental, and I’m especially interested in people who have never played a tabletop RPG. If you’ve ever wanted to say: “Put me on a damaged colony ship and let me figure out what to do,”
