Two photos turn your posture into one number you can track
Postural takes a front and a side photo, measures your posture on the device with Apple's Vision framework, and turns it into a Postural Age: your real age plus a penalty of up to 8 years. It measures five markers and scores only the two with published evidence behind them. The other three are shown and count zero. A licensed physiotherapist reviewed the routines, the form cues and the scoring thresholds. Photos never leave your phone. The scan, the number and the coach note are free.
I built this on nights and weekends. Two photos, front and side, and it turns your posture into one number you can track.
The part I keep having to explain is why it measures five things and counts only two. I had a physiotherapist review the scoring in August, and he signed off on three of the five not counting at all. They are still measured and shown, they are just worth zero years. One of those I found myself: Apple's Vision framework gives you a "neck" landmark that is really the midpoint between your shoulders, so it travels forward when your shoulders round. The angle I was using to detect rounded shoulders could not see rounded shoulders at any threshold. Dropping it took the worst possible score from 13 years added to 8.
Right call, and it cost me something. The number barely moves between scans now. Measurement noise sits around 0.7 years and most people's penalty lands inside that, so I am working on whether the underlying angles can show progress where the headline number cannot. I have not solved it.
Everything runs on the phone with Vision. No photo is uploaded, which also means your scan history shows scores with no pictures attached. The scan, the number and the coach note are free; the daily routine and the history are behind a subscription.
