PeakFlow

AI dictation for Mac and Windows, charged at cost

Hold a key and talk. Let go and it types what you said where your cursor is. Uses OpenAI's gpt-transcribe. I charge what it costs me, about a tenth of a cent a dictation. Top up from $5 and the credit doesn't expire.

Hey, I'm John. I built PeakFlow.

I wanted dictation on my Mac and my Windows PC and the ones I looked at were $12 to $15 a month, even if I only used it a few times. The model underneath costs a fraction of a cent a minute, so I charge that plus fees.

You hold fn on a Mac or Right Ctrl on Windows, say what you want and let go. It types it where your cursor is, in any app.

It costs US$0.0057 a minute, billed by the second. That's OpenAI's price plus card fees and the server, I don't add a margin. 50 dictations a workday comes to about $1.23 a month. Top ups start at $5 and the credit never runs out. You can use your own OpenAI key if you'd rather.

It cleans up ums and ahs and handles "no wait" when you correct yourself. It doesn't rewrite what you said. If the clean up drops a "not", a number or one of your saved words it types your raw words instead. You can add names and words so they get spelt right. If a dictation fails it keeps the clip for 30 minutes so you can resend it.

Dictation has no free tier and there's no phone app yet. If you dictate all day every day an unlimited plan somewhere else will be cheaper, the comparison page shows where that line is.

It also comes with five small desktop tools I use every day, free for 30 days: FocusDim, QuickBoard, ScreenSlap, Liquid Focus and SnapGrid.

There's also Guarana, which is free. It keeps your Mac awake for 15 minutes up to 4 hours, or until you turn it off, from the menu bar. No trial or licence.

I'm around all day, let me know what breaks or what you want added.

Who hunted PeakFlow?

PeakFlow was hunted by John McKeown [iter0 launch]. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it.
