Hey Product Hunt 👋
I'm a solo developer. PDFz started because I kept needing to do three things on my phone and kept having to open a laptop: edit the text that's already in a PDF, get a real Word file out of one, and search inside a scan.
What I learned building each:
Editing existing text is the hard one. A PDF stores glyphs at coordinates, not paragraphs, so editing means finding the run, matching the font and reflowing around it. It works well on ordinary documents and visibly struggles on heavily designed pages. Anyone who says it always works is showing you a demo file.
OCR runs on the phone's own neural engine, so searching inside a scan works in airplane mode.
PDF to Word is the one I could not keep on the phone. iOS has no layout engine that rebuilds paragraphs, tables and reading order, and my on-device version produced files nobody would send to a colleague. So it runs on my server: your file is deleted the moment the conversion finishes, the result when you download it, nothing about the contents is logged. That's the only job that leaves your device, and I'd rather say it here than bury it in a policy page.
Everything else, scanning, editing, signing, forms, compression, translation, happens on the iPhone. There's no account, so there's no database of you to leak.
It's in 49 languages, and Arabic isn't an afterthought: the whole app is right-to-left, and mixed Arabic/English documents keep their reading order when converted. That's the reason I started.
