MediaScope is a Chrome DevTools extension for debugging media playback. It organizes playback information into a connected workflow covering media sources, network delivery, stream structure, playback timing, encoded data, and decoded output. It supports both direct media files and MSE-based streaming, with all analysis performed locally in the browser.

I built MediaScope because debugging browser video often meant jumping between the Network panel, console logs, player internals, and separate media tools—while MSE playback hid the actual media data behind a blob URL.
MediaScope adds a dedicated panel to Chrome DevTools that follows playback from network requests and manifests through SourceBuffer appends, timestamps, samples, GOPs, bitrate, audio, subtitles, and decoded frames.
It supports direct files and MSE streams, including MP4/fMP4, WebM/Matroska, MPEG-TS, HLS, and DASH. All media analysis happens locally in the browser, and nothing is uploaded.
Building it involved working through real playback edge cases such as seeking, separate audio and video SourceBuffers, rolling MSE capture windows, sample offsets, DTS and PTS, codec and encryption boxes, and unified manifest timelines.
