Hearby
Read any text aloud on your Mac, with an on-device voice
Select text in any app and press ⌃⌥S to hear it in a natural voice. The voice runs entirely on your Mac: no cloud, no account, works offline. It skips Markdown and code symbols, so AI replies sound right. Open source. 7-day free trial, then $19 once.
Hi Product Hunt, I'm Justin, and I built Hearby.
I read a lot of AI output, and I kept skimming long replies and missing the one line that mattered. Listening while I look at the code works better for me, but every read-aloud tool I tried either read the Markdown literally ("asterisk asterisk backtick") or sent my text to the cloud to make its voice.
Hearby does neither:
• The voice (Kokoro) runs on your Mac. Nothing you select is uploaded, and it works with Wi-Fi off.
• It cleans text up first: code blocks become "Code block: 40 lines of Swift", URLs and file paths are shortened, symbols are skipped.
• It works everywhere you can select text: Mail, Safari, PDFs, Slack, terminals, VS Code, Cursor.
It's open source (GPLv3), with no account and no subscription: a 7-day free trial with every feature, then $19 once.
I'd love to hear what you'd use it for, and what it reads badly. I'm here all day.

Who hunted Hearby?
Hearby was hunted by Justin Brundage. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
