Gladys is a cast of animated characters who live on your phone. Five things set it apart: They have days. A life that runs whether you open the app or not. They perform. Calls are video, lip-synced animation minted per character. They have hands. A browser that runs as you (she never sees your password), messages, calendar, a desk where she retypes your résumé. The brain runs on the phone. Agent, tools, and memory on-device; never trained on. Make your own. A name, a soul, a voice, a life.
I built Gladys because everything I tried was missing half of itself. The assistants had no soul: brilliant, and they forgot me every morning. The characters had no hands: fun to talk to, useless the moment I needed something done. Memory was a checkbox that stored facts and never felt like being known. And nobody wanted to talk about where all of it ran, or what it cost.
So I pushed each of those to the edge.
Soul: the characters have days. Tiffani, Vinnie, Dr. Vex, Gladys, Jimmy, Wade, and a cat named Nemesis each have a life that runs whether you open the app or not, and you can ask how it went.
Hands: a browser that runs as you, on your phone, with your logins. She never sees your password and asks before anything costs money. Calendar, messages, photos, music, a desk where she retypes your résumé while you watch.
Memory: written in her voice, on your phone, and never used for training. Not a policy. It's where the file is.
Compute: the agent loop, the tools, and the memory are a Rust runtime on the device. Only the model call leaves. No GPU fleet on my side, and calls are video, animation minted per character and lip-synced, without an avatar service.
The approach changed once, hard. It started as one character and a chat. Somewhere around week six of the beta, people started telling me she felt different, more like a friend they talk to a lot. That wasn't a feature I shipped. It was the memory and the days compounding. I've been building around that ever since.
