Hi Product Hunt, I'm Daniel and I built CoverTrace. Before this app, here is how I covered fields on an ID: photo editing software, sometimes Paint, sometimes Microsoft Word, and more than once actual sticky notes on the document before scanning it into my computer. It worked, roughly, and it took at least twenty minutes every time. Worse, for a while I was covering fields on the front of my license and sending the back untouched. That accomplished nothing. The barcode on the back of a US driver's license repeats the details printed on the front: name, address, date of birth, license number, physical description. That's the whole problem in one object. Plenty of companies have a legitimate reason to verify something about you, and almost none of them need every field on the document to do it. But the places that ask for your ID get breached. After a password leak you change the password. There's no version of that for your date of birth or your license number. Once a copy is sitting in a rental office inbox or a host's camera roll, it's out of your hands for as long as they keep it, and the fields they never needed are the part you still control. CoverTrace finds those fields for you, on the phone. You tap to cover, blur, or pixelate. The export is re-rendered as a fresh flat image, so there's nothing under the box to pull back out and photo metadata doesn't carry over. Before you send, it re-reads the finished copy and tells you what's still readable. That's caught a few boxes I'd dragged half off the field. There are templates for common situations like rental applications and host check-ins, because covering too much is its own way to get a copy rejected. The same flow works for the pay stub and bank statement that show up in the same email. What a recipient accepts is always up to them. It also scans your photo library for IDs and documents you've already photographed and forgotten about. That license photo you took in 2019 for one application is still there, still syncing to every device on the account, long after the thing you needed it for was over. You can also put a visible watermark on the copy naming that one recipient and the date, and every document export carries a quiet mark in the image itself. If a copy surfaces where it shouldn't and you can get the file, CoverTrace reads that mark and tells you which copy it was. Which copy, not how it got there. Copies get forwarded, and they can come off either side, including mine. The mark survives a normal export, saving and re-sharing through Photos, and a moderate crop. It won't beat someone who knows it's there and wants it gone. No servers, no accounts, no analytics. The only thing the app ever connects to is billing. Screenshot cleaning and the photo library scanner are free with no limit, along with your first covered export. Pro is $49.99 once, or $19.99 a year with a trial. Happy to get into anything, including the parts that aren't good yet. If the detector misses a field on a document you'd actually have to send, that's the feedback I want most.
