About two years ago, I created a small npm package to meet a personal need. It's a CLI tool for converting images to WebP, initially built just for my own use. After a few updates, I gradually stopped maintaining it, and it sat untouched for nearly two years.
I often found myself wondering, "Is anyone actually using this?"
Recently, I checked the npm download statistics out of curiosity. While the numbers aren't large, I was surprised to see that it still gets downloaded occasionally. Given that I never promoted it and hadn't maintained it for such a long time, this was more meaningful than I expected. It reminded me that even a small utility can quietly assist someone I've never met.
I've decided to take it up again. I plan to update the README, check compatibility with the latest Node.js versions, and gradually improve the necessary parts.
This experience has reinforced my belief that open source doesn't always need to reach thousands of users to be valuable. Sometimes, helping just a few people solve a real problem is enough.
