Hey everyone, I'm Tom. This is Coffeehouse Chess.
It's a game of chess with an opponent you can actually talk to. Say your move, ask what they're planning, or give them a bit of grief when their plan falls apart.
A dedicated chess engine chooses the moves. The voice layer gives your opponent a character and keeps the conversation going as you play.
There are five personalities to play against. The one in my demo is Zadie Flint, a former magician and a bit of a hustler. They remember your games, so you can come back to an opponent you've already spent time with.
The board in the video is my Chessnut Move. It reads my moves and physically plays the opponent's replies. You can also play entirely in your browser.
I've been chipping away at this for a couple of months around my full-time job, usually about two hours a week. Over the last three weeks, GPT-6 Astra helped me build the 3D chessboard, improve the flow of the AI, and polish the website. It's helped me get a lot more of the product working the way I wanted.
